Dr. Karl Steinberg

Certified Medical Director & Ethics Consultant

Dr. Karl Steinberg has been a nursing home, hospice, and home health agency medical director and chief medical officer in the San Diego area since 1995.  He received his bachelor’s in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard and studied medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, taught high school in New York City for three years, then completed his family medicine residency at University of California San Diego (UCSD) in 1990.  He has board certifications in family medicine and in hospice and palliative medicine, and is certified as a nursing home and hospice medical director in addition to having a certification as a healthcare ethics consultant.   

Dr. Steinberg is immediate past president of the National POLST Collaborative, and is a past president (2021-22) of PALTmed (the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association, previously known as AMDA) and the California Association of Long-Term Care Medicine (CALTCM), and past chair of the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California.  He serves on the National Advisory Board for the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care and is the recipient of the 2022 Doris Howell MD Award for Excellence in Palliative Care.   He served on the National Quality Forum’s standing committee on Geriatrics and Palliative Care for over five years. chaired the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM)’s Long-Term Care Special Interest Group, and has served on the AAHPM’s Public Policy Committee.

Dr. Steinberg is on the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Medical Society and serves as a delegate to the AMA and California Medical Association’s House of Delegates, and he chairs CMA’s Council on Ethical, Legal and Judicial Affairs (CELJA) and their Administrative Practice Forum. 

Dr. Steinberg enjoys presenting at educational conferences to professional audiences and the public, and also serves as a consultant and testifying expert witness in civil lawsuits and regulatory matters. He hosts two regular podcasts (PALTtalk with JAMDA and PALTtalk with Caring) for PALTmed that discuss the organization’s publications. But  Dr. Steinberg is perhaps best known for taking his poodles on patient care rounds with him on a regular basis. 


Dr. Daniel Haimowitz

Certified Medical Director & Expert Consultant

Dr. Dan Haimowitz has been a nursing home, assisted living, hospice, and home health agency medical director in the Philadelphia suburbs since 1990.  He received his Bachelor of Science from the Pennsylvania State University, studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College and completed his internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in 1986.  He has board certifications in internal medicine and is certified as a nursing home medical director.   

Dr. Haimowitz  is a past president of the Pennsylvania Medical Directors Association and is a past Board Member of PALTmed (the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association, previously known as AMDA).  He serves on the PA Long Term Care Council and is the current chair of the PALTmed State Advocacy Committee. He is the recipient of both the PALTmed Dodd Award for Distinguished Service and the Pattee Award for Excellence in Education and was the American Geriatrics Society Clinician of the Year in 2001, among other awards. Dr. Haimowitz has chaired multiple PALTmed committees including the Program, Membership and Certified Medical Director committees, as well as the House of Delegates.

He was the initial chair of the Assisted Living Committee and is a national thought leader in that area. He is on the PALTmed Foundation Industry Advisory Board and has been a long time member of the Editorial Board of Caring for the Ages. He currently serves as a Medical Director at two CCRCs. Dr. Haimowitz is a well-regarded speaker at educational conferences for professional audiences and the public, and has been an expert witness for the government, physicians and long-term care facilities. Dr. Haimowitz enjoys taking his Great Dane Ella on patient care rounds with him on a regular basis, where both staff and residents enjoy seeing Ella more than him.
